Perkembangan sektor pariwisata di Kabupaten Gunungkidul memunculkan semangat desa – desa didalamnya untuk mengembangkan kawasan tempat tinggal mereka menjadi Desa Wisata yang menghasilkan produk wisata yang menarik untuk dikunjungi . Begitu juga dengan Desa Salam Patuk Gunungkidul, tepatnya dipinggir jalan Jogja Wonosari. Kelompok Sadar Wisata ( Pokdarwis ) berinisiatif membentuk Desa Wisata yang dikelola mandiri dan diharapkan dapat meningkatkan ekonomi masyarakat. Kurangnya wisata alam yang dimiliki tidak menurunkan semangat warga untuk menjadikan Desa Salam sebagai daerah tujuan wisata. Beberapa warga menanami lahan pekarangan dan kebun mereka dengan bunga amarilis. Bunga yang hanya tumbuh saat memasuki penghujan ini tumbuh subur di daerah desa salam. Saat masa berbunga seluruh kebun akan dipenuhi dominan warna orange yang indah. Selain itu tanaman buah durian juga tumbuh subur disini.
